Biodynamic®
Demeter USA® is the only certifier for Biodynamic farms and products in America. While all of the organic requirements for certification under the National Organic Program are required for Biodynamic certification, the Biodynamic standards go far beyond organic.
Biodynamic certification requires a holistic approach to farming that treats the farm as a living organism. This means:
- Whole Farm Certification — The entire farm must meet Biodynamic standards, not just individual crops
- Biodiversity Requirements — At least 10% of total farm acreage must be set aside for biodiversity
- Biodynamic Preparations — Special preparations made from fermented manure, minerals, and herbs are used to enhance soil and plant health
- Cosmic Rhythms — Planting, cultivating, and harvesting follow lunar and celestial cycles
- Closed Loop System — The farm strives to be self-sufficient, generating its own fertility through composting and cover cropping
